In an ever-expanding and increasingly globalized music industry, Cuban-American percussionist and singer Ivan Llanes stands out as one of the most exciting musicians of his generation. Llanes released his debut LP “La Vida Misma” on March 22nd, 2024 via Vydia.
Originally hailing from Camagüey, Cuba, Ivan has earned himself a prestigious reputation in New York City for his range of percussion skills, distinctive voice, and songwriting style. “La Vida Misma is a reflection of my existence," states Llanes. "It's a story that tells my roots, my personal and professional paths, my learning of life.
Ivan is currently a member of jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker’s quintet, having performed at notable jazz festivals throughout the United States and beyond. Llanes is also a lead vocalist with Latin supergroup People of Earth, having performed alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic and New World Symphony, among others.
He has performed with his band at prestigious venues across New York City, including Times Square with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, National Sawdust, Bona Fide, Fat Cat, and the Bronx Museum during the Havana Film Festival. He also performed at prestigious International Festival Jazz Plaza in Havana Cuba on January 2025.

Prior to relocating to the United States in 2011, Ivan toured Cuba, Europe, and the United States with legendary Cuban flutist Maraca. Since moving to the U.S., Ivan has performed and/or recorded with Grammy-winners Arturo O’Farrill, Nella Rojas, Carlinhos Brown, and Descemer Bueno as well as with Emmy-award-winning composer Katreese Barnes.
Ivan has collaborated with organizations including 92Y, Carnegie Hall, and Marquis Studios to share his passion and knowledge with young people throughout New York and New Jersey. In Ivan’s words, “I play all Cuban music genres, as well as styles from the United States and beyond. “There is always a message of love, unity, and joy in my playing, and I believe that when I share my music, art, and culture with the world I can make an impact.”
